on the way out

we worried , Jill and I for most of the two days in the middle of our trek about how we would manage the climb out, i can walk for miles on a flat or downhill path but it was? nine miles of a gentle slope upwards then a mile on very steep uphill.? some of the party opted to go out on horseback, but i can’t make the bloody things move when i sit on them, some of us? thought about chartering a helicopter.….….…not as expensive as you might think between 6 people.….…..but the Havasupai tribe said it didn’t fly on Wednesdays. so we just decided to walk out leaving an hour before everybody else.and that is what we did.….….…I was still the last out of the canyon, but at exactly the time the guides ?wanted us all out so it wasn’t to bad.….…meanwhile , those who had opted for the horses got flown out by?helicopter as the horses turned up minus saddles. I am pleased to have completed the whole challenge though

On what would have been Basil’s birthday i was clinging to a?rock-face by two sets of fingernails and the toe of one boot.….……” another fine mess you got me in ” i said. .….…he used to say i looked like Stan Laurel? sometimes when i smiled at him.? I have brought back a small piece of rock from the bottom of the canyon to put on his gravestone.….…..i asked?some ?members of the tribe if i might take a bit of their land to? my land, they thought it a great idea.

I feel different.…I don’t know if it?is the ‘closure’ of the stone setting or if it is the achievement of the? challenge? but i am definitely changed.……i am still missing him and talking to him? but i am not so miserable, somehow i feel he is at rest.….…it has been 9 months.
